The work
Coiffure Yoruba takes the form of the Gèlèdè helmet mask: a face with almond eyes and a closed mouth, marked with scarifications on the forehead and cheeks. Above it, the hairstyle takes over, made of twisted braids knotted into a bun and loops.
Like all of Wabi Dossou’s pieces, it is monoxylous, carved from a single block of wood, then painted in oil. The artist works in Covè, Benin, one of the main centres of Gèlèdè mask making, a Yoruba rite honouring the “Mothers” and women.
